September brings one of those weekends cottage owners don’t particularly look forward to.
Closing season.
The dock comes out, outdoor furniture gets packed away, water systems are prepared for colder weather, and another cottage season slowly begins to wrap up.
While you’re working through the checklist, don’t forget about the electronics and entertainment equipment inside.
Start With Your TV Area
Before locking up for an extended period, take a few minutes to look around your entertainment setup.
Check your:
- Television
- Satellite receiver
- Remotes and batteries
- Power bars
- Cables
- Other connected electronics
Follow manufacturer recommendations for storing or powering down electronics when a property will be vacant.
Protect Electronics From Moisture
Seasonal properties can experience large changes in temperature and humidity.
Electronics generally don’t appreciate moisture.
Make sure equipment is stored in a dry location and avoid leaving devices somewhere they’re likely to be exposed to leaks, condensation, or other moisture.
Don’t Forget the Remote
It sounds minor, but batteries left sitting inside remotes for long periods can leak.
If you’re closing the property for several months, consider removing batteries from devices that won’t be used.
Still Using the Cottage This Fall?
Not everyone closes up after Labour Day.
September and October can offer some of the best cottage weekends of the year: fewer bugs, beautiful fall colours, cooler evenings, and quieter lakes.
